Numbers Talk In Job Search
Numbers Talk In Job Search There are many job seekers out who think their job search is measured only by number of interviews theyve had. This couldnt be farther from the reality of things. Job search is a sales cycle. It will take a lot of activities to generate interviews and you need to be able to measure what is working FOR YOU and what is not. Additionally, securing your next job will take you longer than you want or expect. Most of that is out of your control. Employers are taking longer to make their hiring decisions. Factor that in. Know that and be prepared for the long haul. While there are certain metrics that are more successful than others, job search is individual. You may have success in one area and not another. Lets look at some of the numbers you must be tracking. HOURS Recently the Department of Labor stats stated that the average job seeker spends only 18 minutes a day in search. At that rate, no wonder people are unemployed for over a year. The more hours you commit to your job search, the faster you will land a job. This is a full time job. Make it easy to track your hours. Keep a log with you job search folder. Use categories of hours if you really want to understand where you are spending your time. Here are some thoughts: Computer time Face time Phone time You time ACTIVITIES What are the activities that have the biggest bang for the buck? Networking activities. Yet there are other things you should be doing. Start keeping track so you can increase or decrease activities based on their results. Like Weight Watchers setting goals or targets weekly will hopefully drive you to meet these goals. Perhaps you will make one more call or attend that one meeting that will net you a great connection. On-line job postings Networking in person: one on one Networking in groups On-line brand management (LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook or other on-line networking) Research (company, person, industry) Administration (resume tweak, marketing plan update, cover thank you, applications) Professional development (workshops, reading, professional associations) Volunteer Connect with recruiters/search firms INTERVIEWS There are phone screening interviews, first interviews and second interviews There should be a conversion rate here. If you are getting first interview but not second interviews, that means you will need to work on your interviewing skills. Phone screen First Interview Second Interview Ive been told many times that tracking this stuff is a waste of time. My belief is that is critically important to know this stuff. How can you do an analysis? How can you improve what you are doing or change what you are doing if you cant tell exactly what you are doing. From my experience working with job seekers, it is going to take hundreds of hours, networking contacts and 100% of your commitment to make your next job happen. There is a progress chart used by Orville Pierson which can be helpful in setting up your tracking system. You can learn how to fix your search and access an Excel version of the progress chart here. Are you ready for an Encore Career - Hallie Crawford
Are you ready for an Encore Career How to prepare yourself for working beyond retirement age: Part 1 If youâre over age 45 and have been at the same job or in the same industry most of your life, you may be thinking that a âchange of sceneryâ is something you want to do before you stop working completely. If you do, what youâre looking for is an âencore careerâ, or a career that you switch to as a sort of 2nd Act to your working life. Also, you would not be alone as hundreds of thousands of men and women all over the country are starting encore careers as we speak. Itâs quite the emerging trend, to be sure. Marc Freedman, the CEO of Encore.org, made the phrase âencore careerâ popular in his book Encore: Finding Work That Matters in the Second Half of Life. That was way back in 2007 and since then the term has definitely become quite popular. As people are living longer and staying fitter and healthier, many have come to realize that thereâs no need to limit themselves to one career path or stay in one particular industry until they are ready to retire completely. The Internet has certainly helped to fuel the growing encore career trend as itâs now easier than ever to not only learn a new skill or trade online but also build a following, advertise and start a business doing something that you love or have a great passion for. For someone whoâs looking to embrace an encore career there are a number of different things that should be done in order to make the transition easier and smoother. One of the most important is to treat your encore career like any other type of career change and put in the time and effort that you need in order to do it right. Learning as much as you can about what you plan to do or create, including taking online classes or âreal worldâ classes at your local community college, is a must. There are also plenty of other activities that can and should be done like volunteering, taking an apprenticeship with someone whoâs willing to teach you and even moonlighting while youâre still working. One of the reasons to do all of this research and engage in all of these activities is to truly find out if you want to change careers and, more importantly, if itâs something that is going to replace the income that you are now making. If you have planned well and have had a well-paying career, taking on an encore career that pays less may well be a possibility, especially if you already have a well-funded retirement nest egg. On the other hand, if you are still depending on a steady paycheck and taking a big pay cut would not fit in your lifestyle, an encore career might be something that you have to forgo, at least until you are financially more capable of doing it. Again, starting your encore career while you are still working in your first career is definitely a possibility. As with most things, an encore career is simply another opportunity that, if youâre lucky, life will open up to you. If you are ready to leave your first career behind but donât want to stop working completely or wish to do something completely different, an encore career may be just the ticket. Indeed for many people, their encore career has turned into the highlight of their life. and Katie Weiser Certified Career Coaches P.S. What Are The Benefits Of Using A Reputable Resume Writing Service?
What Are The Benefits Of Using A Reputable Resume Writing Service? Now that I have done my research on thumbtack lifeworks resume writing services, I feel that I can confidently write an effective resume to give them the best. But first I need to know what a thumbtack is? I suppose a thumbtack is what we call a palm scraper.Once you have written your resume, your job is almost done. The rest of the steps to be taken to get an interview with the right employer will only take a few minutes, at most. Here are some tips that will help you along the way:The first thing you need to do is look at the company you are applying for and go over all of their job descriptions. There are several things that you should look for when looking at the job description of the company you are applying for.First, it would be very helpful if you would fill out the job description completely. You should write it like you are describing yourself to them. Be sure to be clear and concise. If you don't do this st ep, then they can't tell if you are trying to trick them into thinking you are who you claim to be.Second, you should be very clear about what your skills are. After you finish your resume, you should list down the skills that you have that make you qualified for the job. It is important that you explain them to the hiring manager in as much detail as possible. If they are not being offered the job, this will be an indicator that you do not have the skills they are looking for.Third, you should always use the thumbtack lifeworks resume writing service if you are hiring a member of the staff from a thumbtack. Thereare many companies out there that make money with online jobs such as this. If you hire from these companies, they will ask you questions about you such as where you grew up, where you went to school, your professional experience, what job you have held previously, etc. This will give them a better idea of you, the applicant.Fourth, and this is a key step, is to submit your resume. You should print it out or you can submit it electronically through e-mail to the company. If you do that, you will have the advantage of letting them see it early.

The Best Advice I Ever Got Jerry Wilmink, Wisewear CEO
The Best Advice I Ever Got Jerry Wilmink, Wisewear CEO Ph.D.-turned-entrepreneur Gerald âJerryâ J. Wilmink is the founder and CEO of WiseWear Corporation, a Texas-based digital health company that develops wearable technology products for fitness and medical applications. Every piece in its flagship line of âsmartâ luxury jewelry comes with distress messaging, mobile notifications, and detailed health and wellness activity tracking. The company holds seven patents and 10 trademarks and recently closed a $2.5 million investment round. A biomedical engineer and self-described âmad scientist,â Wilmink also has experience as an inventor, startup business consultant for venture capital firms, and program manager for the Department of Defenseâs $2 billion Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. In 2015, Wilmink was selected for San Antonio Business Journalâs 40 Under 40 list. He learned how to be bold early in life, as he explains below. Whatâs the best piece of advice you ever got? At a very young age, my mother gave me the best career advice: âWhen you do what you love, you never have to work a day in your life.â My mom is my role model. At age 33, she went to college. Going to college is not a big deal to many families, but to our family this was huge news. My mom was the first person in our family to go to college. After earning her undergraduate degree, my mother then actively pursued her next dream. She enrolled in law school for night classes. To this day, I still have vivid memories of watching my mother and her college classmates preparing for law school exams. After finishing law school she proceeded to work at a mid-size law firm for a short period. She then moved on to her next dream: opening up her own law firm. Many people discouraged her from doing so, but she had an entrepreneurial dream, and she went for it. Watching her through the eyes of a child gave me the courage to follow my own passions. What was your biggest mistake to date, and what did it teach you? The biggest mistake I have made is hiring people who did not fit the âSWANâ mold. SWANs are: Smart: You need to hire smart people who are hungry to learn new things. Works hard: You need to hire people who have grit and an âengineâ to work hard. Startup founders and early employees put in insane work weeks, sometimes exceeding 90 hours a week. Ambitious: You need to hire people who are devoted and make sure their interests are the same as the organization. Nice: You need to hire people who are optimistic, know how to have fun and are nice. Startup founders and employees spend a ton of time together, and you want to have fun while you crush it at work. What advice would you pass on to aspiring entrepreneurs? To be best prepared for the âroller coasterâ of startup life, I strongly recommend starting a business where your passion, domain expertise, and ability to make meaning in the world all intersect. To quote a conversation between Ben Horowitz and Marc Andreessen, in startups âyou only ever experience two emotions: euphoria and terror. And I find that lack of sleep enhances them both.â So I would also suggest that anyone launching a business try to get enough sleep! Jerry Wilmink is a member of Young Entrepreneur Council (YEC), an invite-only organization comprised of the worldâs most promising young entrepreneurs, which has partnered with MONEY.com to help produce this series.

What To Do When Youre Burned Out At Work - Work It Daily
What To Do When Youre Burned Out At Work - Work It Daily At some point (or at multiple points) of an individualâs career, they will eventually become burned out. This is inevitable and should be expected. Related: Burned Out? How To Take A Vacation Without Taking A Vacation Whatâs really unfortunate is that people are becoming burned out much earlier in their careers than ever before. Millennials for example are experiencing burn out by the time they hit 30. The reason for this is simple. The workforce has become extremely crowded. For the first time in recent history, weâre seeing three generations in the workforce competing for the same job. Baby Boomers, Gen X, and Millennials. Often times, depending on how bad a burnout is, a person can spiral into a depression or begin wondering where their life is headed. So, what do you do when this happens? 1. Take Time Off If at all possible, you may want to consider quitting your job, especially if youâre spiraling into a deep depression. If this is too much of a stretch and too big a leap of faith, consider using vacation time to take a week or two to really think about things. This is a good segway into #2. 2. Dig Deep While you take time off, spend time digging deep within yourself to really determine the root cause of your problem. Oftentimes, people forget this very important step and instead they job hop from one place to the next, all the while ignoring that perhaps the problem isnât their job, but rather their profession. When you spend time digging deep, you may discover that you need to change careers altogether. This will not be an easy or quick transition, but it could be well worth it long-term. 3. Learn Something New The brain is a muscle that needs to be worked out. Unfortunately, after most people are done with their education, they never pick up another book and they never learn a new skill. Learning a new skill or several, could be the experience you need that will open you up to career alternatives you never imagined before. 4. Re-Invent Yourself If youâre like most people, you lack a personal brand. On a very basic level, a personal brand consists of a website portfolio, stockpiles of reference letters, an active blog, a network, and a published book. If you donât have a personal brand, you need to build one. This will help re-invent you, increase your earning potential and give you an opportunity to seek new offers. Shes independent, clever and adventurous, and shes clearly a good person, someone who always does right by her friends. What I loved most was that she was a girl, and she was a little different, and she was still the most powerful character in those books.--Kayla Heisler is an essayist and Pushcart Prize-nominated poet.
